About The NY Interfaith Commission For Housing Equality

Harlem lost its gatekeeper when the Harlem Urban Development Corporation was shut down in 1995 by Governor George Pataki. Since then, Harlem has been under attack by powerful institutions and predatory developers only interested in profit. Too many decisions impacting Harlem’s future are being made behind closed doors, without directly benefiting the community. Profit-hungry institutions are simply not being held accountable. The NY Interfaith Commission for Housing Equality was formed in response to this dire situation. The Commission works to create a much needed dialogue with the community and raise awareness around these issues. The Interfaith Commission is a coalition composed of passionate faith leaders from across Harlem who have dedicated themselves to advocating for the needs of the community. Their goal is to protect Harlem residents from displacement and preserve the historical integrity of this iconic New York City neighborhood.

About Defend Harlem

Defend Harlem produces content, organizes public events, and connects with other organizations to raise community awareness about predatory development and create solutions to fight displacement. Defend Harlem also functions as a platform for Harlem, highlighting members of the community in addition to paying homage to those who paved the way for us today! It is an initiative organized by The Interfaith Housing Commission for Housing Equality in partnership with Young Atlas and other Harlem community members. Together, they have created a petition with nearly 2,00 signatures, and they are currently in the process of compiling a list of community organizations that support SB9028 and the fight against Columbia’s expansion.
